Danish-to-English Translation
Mark W. Kline
“No American poet sounds exactly like that, but one could. I wish one did.” Stephen Burt, Yale Review
“A compelling story of the ethnic cleansing of Christian communities caught in the crossfire of the Middle East at war …” Kirkus Review
“Although some stories veer from noir orthodoxy, there are fine examples of lyrical writing, noir sensibilities, and insight into the current Danish psyche. Overall, a very impressive anthology.” Library Journal
For years I’ve focused on translating Danish crime fiction, fifteen novels so far, by writers including Sarah Blædel, Inger Wolf, A.J. Kazinski, and Jakob Melander. I’ve also translated works in various other genres, for example: a poetry collection by Mette Moestrup, “kingsize,” winner of the Danish Montana Prize for innovative literature; short stories by Helle Helle, Kristina Stoltz, Jonas Bengtsson, Benn Q. Holm, Naja Marie Aidt, et al.; “Say Hello to Your Shame,” by psychotherapist Ilse Sand; “The Last Supper,” by the journalist Klaus Wivel, on the plight of Christians in the Middle East; and “The Camp,” by Oscar K., a controversial children’s book about a concentration camp.
I also write short stories, several of which have appeared in magazines such as The Missouri Review, Epiphany, Fugue, and Tulane Review.
